Trauma – Brainspotting
Brainspotting is a cutting-edge therapeutic approach that accesses the brain’s deeply held trauma and emotional pain through fixed eye positions. Developed by Dr David Grand, Brainspotting helps individuals process and release trauma by focusing on specific “brainspots” that correlate with emotional distress.
How Brainspotting Works
Brainspotting involves the therapist guiding the client’s gaze to specific points in their visual field, called brainspots, which are believed to access the brain’s trauma networks. The process includes:
- Identification of Brainspots: The therapist helps the client find brainspots by observing eye movements and responses to certain visual positions.
- Focused Attention: The client maintains focus on the brainspot while processing the associated emotions and sensations.
- Processing and Release: As the client maintains focus on the brainspot, they process and release the trauma held in the brain’s deeper regions.
- Integration: The therapist supports the client in integrating the processed emotions and achieving a sense of resolution.
Benefits of Brainspotting
- Deep Trauma Processing: Brainspotting accesses the brain’s subcortical regions, allowing for deep and thorough trauma processing.
- Reduces Physical Symptoms: Many clients experience relief from physical symptoms associated with trauma, such as tension and pain.
- Enhances Emotional Healing: Brainspotting facilitates emotional healing by directly targeting the brain’s trauma networks.
- Supports Self-Regulation: The approach helps clients develop better self-regulation and emotional resilience.
