Multichannel Eye Movement Integration (MEMI) Therapy Singapore

The brain science path to easy and effective PTSD Trauma treatment

What Is Multichannel Eye Movement Integration (MEMI) Therapy?

Multichannel Eye Movement Integration (MEMI) is an innovative, neuroscience-informed approach designed to help individuals gently resolve emotional distress and traumatic experiences without reliving them. Developed by Dr Mike Deninger, a licensed professional counsellor, educator, and trauma-therapy trainer, MEMI builds upon Eye Movement Integration (EMI) and draws from Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Ego State Therapy. By engaging the brain’s multiple sensory “channels” , sight, sound, emotion, body sensation, and thought, MEMI helps the brain integrate past experiences and restore balance. Through gentle guided eye movements, it supports the brain’s natural capacity for memory reconsolidation, allowing distressing experiences to lose their emotional charge and become integrated into a calmer, more adaptive state.

How MEMI Works?

A Multisensory Path to Integration

During MEMI, your therapist guides smooth, slow eye movements while you remain lightly aware of a distressing image, sensation, or feeling.
This process engages multiple brain networks simultaneously, allowing new, calmer associations to form.

Each “channel” (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, emotional, cognitive) is activated and harmonised, helping the nervous system to process unresolved material naturally, without retraumatisation.

These eye-movement patterns are not random, they’re grounded in neuroscience. Understanding the science behind MEMI helps explain why it feels so calming and yet so powerful.

 The Science Behind MEMI

When distressing memories are reactivated in a safe environment, the brain can update how they are stored — a process called memory reconsolidation.
MEMI uses bilateral eye movements and sensory awareness to support this reconsolidation, helping clients shift from reactivity and fear to regulation and calm.

Of course, effective therapy isn’t just about technique, it’s also about safety. Before any processing begins, your therapist ensures you’re grounded, centred, and in full control.

The Role of Safety and Grounding

Sessions always begin with grounding. Clients remain fully aware, oriented, and in control at every stage.
You do not need to narrate or re-experience painful events in detail.
Safety, consent, and pacing are central to the MEMI process.

Once you feel settled and ready, the session unfolds in a carefully paced sequence designed to honour both your comfort and your nervous system’s natural rhythm.

What to Expect in a MEMI Session

A typical session begins with a short discussion to identify what you’d like to work on, a feeling, thought, or memory.
You’ll then be guided through gentle eye movements while staying aware of your body and emotions.
After several cycles, clients often notice:

  • Emotional relief or lightness

  • A reduction in physical tension

  • New insights or perspectives

  • An overall sense of calm and completion

Each session lasts about 50–60 minutes, and the pace is tailored to your comfort and readiness.

“Clients often describe MEMI as feeling both deeply healing and surprisingly gentle.”

Many clients describe subtle but lasting changes after a session, not dramatic reliving, but a quiet sense of release. Over time, these experiences translate into tangible emotional and physical benefits.

MEMI Compared with EMDR and Brainspotting

EMDRBilateral stimulation and reprocessingStructured eight-phase protocolPTSD, trauma, distressing memories

At Listening Ear Counselling & Consultancy, MEMI is often integrated with EMDR, Brainspotting, or Somatic Therapy to match each client’s needs and readiness.
This multi-modality flexibility ensures your healing journey unfolds safely and effectively.

With its flexible, multisensory nature, MEMI can support a wide range of people and issues,  from single traumatic events to chronic stress patterns that feel ‘stuck’.

Who Can Benefit from MEMI

MEMI can support individuals experiencing:

  • Trauma or post-traumatic stress

  • Anxiety, panic, or chronic stress

  • Shame, guilt, or grief

  • Relationship wounds or emotional triggers

  • Burnout and adjustment difficulties

  • Residual pain from past experiences that feel “stuck”

It’s suitable for clients who want to move beyond talk therapy and engage the body–mind connection in healing.

Yes. MEMI can be adapted for online sessions with appropriate visual guidance. Many clients find it just as effective.

While both use eye movements to stimulate bilateral brain activity, MEMI engages multiple sensory channels simultaneously and tends to be more fluid and less protocol-driven.
